'Daunted' star pens autobiography

Dame Julie Andrews said writing her life story from the music halls of London to Broadway stardom was "daunting, to say the least".

The heroine of The Sound Of Music and Mary Poppins "vividly recreates the years before the movies" in Home: A Memoir, which will be published next April, publisher Weidenfeld & Nicolson said.

Dame Julie, 72, said her autobiography was 10 years in the making and brought back many memories.

The Oscar-winning actress said: "I've just finished my autobiography, which is a memoir of my early years, so that was a huge push on my part."

Asked how she felt, she said: "It was a little bit of everything. It was daunting to say the least.

"I tried to check my facts and make it as truthful as possible. And it's also re-awakened a lot of memories and thoughts, and it took a long time.

"It's been about 10 years in the making and the last four years have been the real push."

She added that the autobiography "deals with all the early years that I worked in England and toured in musicals, and ... how I got the chance to come to New York and all of that."

The publishers said the autobiography was "an honest, touching and revealing memoir of the early life of a true icon".
