Simeon's Gift Musical—Co-Authored by Julie Andrews—to Premiere at Bay Street
Simeon's Gift — a new musical with a book co-written by the legendary actress Julie Andrews and her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton — will have its world premiere Nov. 23-Dec. 2 at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor, NY. Tickets are on sale now.
Music is by Ian Fraser and lyrics are by John Bucchino. The musical is adapted from Andrews (who goes by Julie Andrews Edwards for her writing projects) and Hamilton's children's book — a New York Times bestseller — published by HarperCollins in 2003.
After Bay Street, the show will go on a national tour in 2008.
The musical received a private concert reading at Bay Street Theatre on Feb. 10, directed by Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who will also direct the fall production. The cast of the reading included Max von Essen, Carolann Sanita, Josh Walden, Everett Bradley and Christy Morton, with narration by Andrews. David Krane was the music director. Cast for the upcoming production has not been announced
Hamilton is a co-founder of Bay Street, and Andrews — the star of the films "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" — directed The Boy Friend there in 2003.
Press notes describe the musical as such: "The story begins when a humble musician sets out to improve his craft, risking the loss of all that is important to him, including the love of his beautiful Sorrel. The journey brings many discoveries, and though he tries hard to absorb the vast new tapestry of sounds and ideas before him, the scope of choices eventually becomes overwhelming. Dispirited, he turns for home — and alone in the grace of nature, he experiences a series of wondrous events that lead him to the discovery of his own true self, and the glorious gift he has to offer."
The show will have special school group matinees on Nov. 28 and 29 at 11 AM. A complimentary chaperone ticket is included for every group of 20 student tickets sold for the matinees.
The other performances are Nov. 23 at 8 PM, Nov. 24 at 2 PM and 8 PM, Nov. 25 at 2 PM, Nov. 30 at 8 PM, Dec. 1 at 2 PM and 8 PM and Dec. 2 at 2 PM.
